Algoma Pastels -A Palette for all Seasons
A
seasonal selection of pastel workshops en plein air
with
Diana Blazek

"The
World Below our Feet" . by Diana Blazek
The
settings that we have chosen for the
workshop present a range of possible subjects, from grand vistas to the
up
close and personal. Instruction will involve approaches that will
help
you to temper the chaotic landscape into a simplified, personal
interpretation. You will use and develop skills of observation,
composition, and manipulation of the medium to learn how to reduce the
vast
amounts of information and "get it down" on paper. Diana, our
instructor, has extensive experience working in pastels. She
loves the
brilliant colours, and recommends pastels as an immediate,
portable
medium, perfect for quick studies, as well as detailed, finished works.
Diana's
instructional style is to encourage participants to work
independently to develop their own distinctive style, rather than
taking the
"do as I do" approach. Studio demonstrations and instruction
focus on the elements of a dynamic composition, colour theory, and
techniques
for building the brilliant colours that make pastels such an exciting
medium.
In the field you will have the opportunity to apply what you have
learned, choosing your own subject and composition; there will be a
heavy
emphasis on hands-on practice, with plenty of individualized
assistance, and
positive and supportive group critiques built into the learning
process. We
expect and welcome artists with a range of experience and skills, from
beginners to practicing artists.

Spring
Palette
May 19 to 24, 2010
Algoma's spring palette offers a surprising and exciting variety; new
colours pop every day as maples bud in reds and purples and new leaves
of every possible green emerge. Streams and waterfalls are in
freshet, and the air is filled with the song of migrant and nesting
birds. |
Summer
Solstice
June 23 to 28, 2010
June in Algoma showcases the lushness of the new season, with
wildflowers in bloom, serene lakes reflecting forest clad hills in a
multitude of textures, deep blue skies and golden sunsets.

Autumn's
First Blush
September 7 to 12, 2010
Algoma's famous autumn begins with the first
blush of
deep purple across the maple forests; sudden bursts of brilliant
crimson glow against the complementary greens. Skies are dramatic,
sunsets spectacular.
