The magnificent autumn beauty of Algoma, and Diana Blazek's holistic approach to instruction, work together to produce a total creative experience for artists of any experience level, in this workshop which focuses on plein air drawing and painting in pastels and/or the medium of your choice.

The settings that we have chosen for the workshop present a range of possible subjects, from grand vistas to the up close and personal.; Diana's instruction involves approaches that will help you to temper the chaotic landscape into a simplified, personal interpretation.  You will use and develop skills of observation, composition, and manipulation of your medium, to learn how to reduce the vast amounts of information and "get it down" on paper.

Diana, our instructor, has formal training and extensive experience working and instructing in a variety of media; she has recently been working in pastels and has received critical acclaim for her work.  Workshop participants who wish to experience, or increase their skill in, working in pastels will have ample opportunity to observe and learn about Diana's masterful approach to this medium, while those who prefer to work in other mediums will find Diana's extensive knowledge and holistic approach inspiring and informative.

In her workshops, Diana encourages participants to work independently to develop their own distinctive style, rather than taking the "do as I do" approach.  Consequently you will choose your own subject and composition; there will be a minimum of formal instruction and an emphasis on hands-on practice, with lots of individualized attention and assistance.

We expect and welcome artists with a range of experience and skills, from beginners to practicing artists.  Much of the pleasure and value in a workshop of this nature comes from the sharing of ideas and approaches among participants, which is why the "critique and conversation" (and wine!) part of the workshop is so important.
