The Itinerary
Wednesday,
June 18
Arrive at Kegos
Camp any time
during the
day on Wednesday, and settle in to your cottage. Each participant
has a private bedroom in a shared two or three bedroom lakeside
cottage. Each cottage has a three piece bathroom and full kitchen
and sitting area. Makings for tea and coffee are provided in your
cottage. Beginning Wednesday evening at about 5:00, we'll have a
get-acquainted supper and orientation session at Hemlock Studio.
It's just a few minutes drive - transportation is provided, but you may
take your own vehicle if you prefer.
Thursday,
June 19
Thursday
morning at about 8 a.m.
we get
together over a delicious breakfast at Hemlock Studio. After
breakfast we head up the road a few miles to Pig Pen Chutes, a location
which is much prettier than it's name! This is a chute (rapids)
on the Mississagi River. Arriving at the location at about 10
a.m., we take a brief hike of a few minutes from the road to the
river. At the riverside there is a large open rocky area with
plenty of room to set up easels. We have chosen this location
because it provides a variety of subjects, from grand vistas up
and down the river, to closeups of rocks, trees, and water. Lunch will
be provided on location and we will continue to work through until
about 3:00 p.m. Then we'll all head back to Hemlock Studio where
we'll
share and critique our work in a warm, positive, and supportive
atmosphere, with a little wine to ease the process! Then we'll
enjoy another communal supper before returning to our cottages to relax
for the rest of the evening.
Friday, June 20, Saturday June 21 Friday and Saturday will unfold much like Thursday, with a change of venue each day to another of the many nearby scenic locations. Sunday,
June 22
Sunday morning, after a continental breakfast at Kegos, we'll head out to Art, Tarts, and Tea, where we'll set up our easels in the gardens overlooking the diverse landscape of this lovely setting. Again, a variety of subjects present themselves: landscapes with greening fields, farm animals, and distant hills, or floral subjects both closeup and panoramic. We'll take a break for Sunday brunch served al fresco, then continue on with our workshop until mid-afternoon. We'll wind up our weekend with critique and conversation over afternoon tea, followed by relaxation and the opportunity to enjoy the surrounding wilderness. Sunday evening accommodation, and continental breakfast on Monday morning prior to your departure, are included in the price. Weather and black flies may limit the length and location of pleine aire sessions at this time of year. Alternatives may include working from field studies and photographs in a studio setting. |

The
Instruction
The settings that we have chosen for the workshop present a range of possible subjects, from grand vistas to the up close and personal. Instruction will involve approaches that will help you to temper the chaotic landscape into a simplified, personal interpretation. You will use and develop skills of observation, composition, and manipulation of the medium to learn how to reduce the vast amounts of information and "get it down" on paper. Diana, our instructor, has extensive experience working in pastels. She loves the brilliant colours, and recommends pastels as an immediate, portable medium, perfect for quick studies, and detailed, finished works. Diana's instructional style is to encourage participants to work independently to develop their own distinctive style, rather than taking the "do as I do" approach. Consequently you will choose your own subject and composition; there will be a minimum of formal instruction and an emphasis on hands-on practice, with individualized assistance. We expect and welcome artists with a range of experience and skills, from beginners to practicing artists. Much of the pleasure and value in a workshop of this nature comes from the sharing of ideas and approaches among participants, which is why the "critique and conversation" (and wine!) part of the workshop is so important. |
